Image goes blurry when turned into 3d layer
Posted by Quentin Bellow on June 22, 2009 at 4:48 pmHas any one run into an issue where images go blurry when they are made into 3d layers in after effects? I have come accross this problem on several occasions. Some one told me it has something to do with the camera being to far in negative z, but I tried adjusting that and it doesn’t change the blurriness.

June 22, 2009 at 5:18 pmif the problem is seem within the preview, check to see if opengl is the problem… at the bottom of the preview window, toward the right side, there is a little icon that looks like a rectangle with a lightning bolt… click it and choose ‘adaptive resolution’.
if it goes away then opengl was the problem… if not then it’s something else.
how bad is the blurriness? remember images/footage will get scaled in accordance to 3d space. raster images that get scaled will tend to get a little soft. if they get scaled up, the softness will be more noticeable, to the point that it will start looking pixelated…
another possibility is that depth of fileld is enabled for the camera and the image is outside the cameras dof range.

June 22, 2009 at 5:25 pmI will look into the opengl thing but I doubt that is the reason, I usually don’t use opengl. Its probably a resolution issue with the images then. strange thing is I am usually working with some pretty high rez images and they still go a little soft, Interesting.

August 10, 2011 at 5:08 pmHi Dave, I get the same blurry image issue using vector files turned into 3D layers. No 3D camera needed, just a 3D null. I get this whether or not Quality & Collapse Transformations is switched on or not. My graphics are not pre-composed. Just Illustrator files with 3D switched on, attached to a 3D null. Thanks.

August 12, 2011 at 4:20 pmHi Dave,
– It does this whether or not Collapse Transformation and Quality are switched on
– It happens whether or not the comp is nested or “preserve nested comps” is selected in comp settings
– Happens whether there’s a null or not (not requiring 3D camera).
– 3D is switched on for the layer.Weird! Thanks for any suggestions.
