Making image sequences in compressor is best done with all the images in a folder which is likely why it didn’t work for you . Put all the images from you sequence in one folder. I usually use a third party app to rename and re number image sequence files prior to processing with compressor so that the names reflect something related to their content .
If by some chance compressor won’t support .png files you can always get graphic converter which will batch convert graphic files from one format to another then convert your .png’s to some other friendlier format. Motion as you have discovered, will also do a fine job, I just find the compressor route faster for most of my needs.
