I was hoping somebody could shed some light on this error message…

After Effects error: unable to allocate space for a 14400 x 486 image buffer.
You may be experiencing fragmentation. In the Memory & Cache Preferences dialog box, try decreasing the Maximum RAM Cache Size value and selecting the Enable Disk Cache option, increasing Maximum Memory Usage, or both. (7 :: 66)”

I get it during render on two layers that are using the same sets of effects. Im pretty sure it is one of the animation presets I have on the layers. What can I do about this?

I have tried the suggestions on the error message itself to no avail. I can post the entire render log file if anyone thinks it will help.

    Thanks!!

enabling disk cache has usually helped me when i get that error. except when i use ae7 on a mac pro, particuarly with cc effects (although the error message is a little different, just a image buffer error). to fix that i usually have to restart ae7.

    you could also try edit>purge>all…

what version, platform and effects are you using?

Actually clearing the buffers and restarting did the trick. Im not sure what the 14,000 is referring to? I dont have a layer nearly that big in the comp unless it is the stretch in preset that is triggering that.

    Thanks everybody.

Jonas Hummerstrand has a good blog post about this error and how to avoid it
