I work at a production company with a lot of crappy video, and I keep finding that a lot of the fixes I try to use – smooth cam filter, slow motion – result in really blurry, glitchy-looking video. I know that if I have a superfast clip simple slow motion is not going to look great, but I have average-speed clips that are blurring like crazy when I put them at 85% speed. Most of the time slow motion isn’t an option at all. I just applied a smoothcam filter to a clip with some camera bumps – not a whole lot – and now the zoom is fairly smooth but the entire image sort of wavers. Is that just the tradeoff you have to make, or is there something I can do with my system or settings to improve it? I’m using Final Cut Studio 2/FCP 6 on a 2.66 GHz Mac Pro. Thanks!

probably not a great answer but maybe it will help.
I’ve experimented a little with Smoothcam.. a couple suggestions, make a really short clip (standalone), and experiment with it.. you start to get the feeling what the sliders do.. I get jumpiness and blurriness in the standard apple setting from camera motion that I would not qualify as extreme in any sense..

My first setting to try on anything with smoothcam is to move the “translation Smooth” close to one, and go from there. But honestly.. get a short clip and blow an hour or two playing.. It’s worth its weight in gold when you can get it to work right.

Hope that helps a little bit..
