A 4 core 2008 MacPro isnt much of a competitor. Doesn’t have to even be the newest iMac. An 8 core is a bit more in line with a maxed out iMac. But since the MacPro doesn’t have sandy/ivy bridge, it’d easily be slower with FCP X.

In looking at it closer, the new iMac is the first 4 core i7 to beat out any 8 core xeon. So basically, I’d say the i7 is now more than twice as fast as the xeons that Apple uses in it’s MacPros. Four cores being faster than the xeon 8 core. The 2011 iMac is just a little slower, but even that little margin puts it down the list behind all the 8 core MacPros and the one 6 core, but still faster than the 4 cores. So you could get a 2011 iMac for a discount (buy mine!) and have yourself a built in DVD burner and FW800. If you don’t plan on running Adobe Premiere or AE (both utilizes the new nvidia cards) it might work for ya.

Thanks…but like most of us, I’m awaiting news of a new MAC PRO – but if it doesn’t come out then might get latest totally maxed out imac.

    Thanks

Since they said they’ll have “something” in late 2013 I’m taking what I can get now. A maxed out iMac is $2500 and the previous model is still worth almost 2k, so renting an iMac for a year for $500 isn’t bad.

Putting my order for a new one in tonight. Need that graphics card for AE and possibly premiere.
