My boss wants to put FCP6 on his iMac Intel Core 2 Duo (2.33 GHz, 3 Gb RAM, with NVidia GForce 7600GT graphics card). Source material will be predominantly DVCAM (DSR-11 input). Would like to use Firewire drives for media (any suggestions?). Final product will be educational Best Practices that will be put on a server for web access. Will there be any issues? Thanks.

Have you the read the requirements for FCS 2?

If you do have issues, they will be operator errors.

These system can do a fine job especially with DV footage. Use good FW800 drives (I really like OWC macsales.com drives).

If you want to monitor to an external video monitor look into the Matrox MXO.

The one issue is capturing since the iMac only has one bus sometimes you get dropped frames since the drive and the deck are on the same bus. If you run into problems you can hook the drive up via the USB2 when capturing, then go to FW for editing. USB is not the best for MAC and editing but it does work.

With all this said, if you are buying a new system it is much saver to get the low end tower and a non apple 23″ monitor and be safe for an extra grand, but not everyone has an extra grand.

    Thanks Steve,
My concern was the video card, but it should be all right. The operator will be a part-time intern from one of our high schools, and I want to keep it as simple as possible – maybe drop back to Final Cut Express…

    Thanks Michael,
The iMac is already in house, so we will go with what we have. Thanks for the advice on the drive, etc.

    Hey Steve,

Do Color and Motion run on your iMac?
I’ve got exactly the same model and I’m planning to purchase FCS2.
    Thanks in advance.
