Is it just me, or is this aspect of multiclip cutting a little clunky? I’m not really complaining, b/c it’s such a great feature, but it’s a little tough to setup.

Or am I just not getting it?

What I’m talking about, specifically, is using the ‘open’ method of cutting multiclip material, so you can “switch” angles while playing the clips back.

What I find clunky is trying to set it up so the same audio track plays throughout. Of course, there’s usually a boom track and a clip-on mic track. What is the best way to set up the clip in the timeline to keep the “good audio” playing throughout?

What I tried (and this is the clunky part) is taking the multiclip into the timeline as a linked file, then unlinking, then changing the angle of the audio to one I want to keep throughout, then linking it to the proper angle of the first cut of video. This way, I can play the multiclip and start switching and the right audio will remain throughout, instead of switching back and forth between mic’s and then having to roll out the right audio when I’m done. Hope I explained this well enough.

Any better workflow that I’m just not seeing?

You can select a ‘permanent’ audio track and cut to the video. It is selectable when you have loaded the multiclip in the viewer from the dropdown menu.

Ahhh, thank-you!!! I’ll have to try this tomorrow when I’m at my workstation. Must’ve missed that one in the manual.

    reel2reel,

You’ll notice that once you’ve loaded your multiclip into the viewer that the active video track has a blue border and the active audio track has a green one. Before you start to cut just make sure that you have FCP set up to just cut the video and not the audio, otherwise you’ll cut to the active video track’s audio each time, which is what I understand you don’t want to do. Page 280 in volume II will explain this better than I.

    Thanks a lot, Don!

I covered this in the manual, but was jumping back and forth to FCP, so I must’ve missed this. I’ll read through slower this time (I tend to get a little too excited, I think).
