Kirk, do you have your the Virtual GFX card enabled (not sure if that model MBP has this or not)? If so, disable it. I had a similar issue with my 2010 17″ MBP and disabling that virtual (or 2nd) GFX card solved my issue.

I realize this is an old post, but ya never know.

Hey, thanks for that. This is an old post and I have moved on to a pair of rMBP 15s. Didn’t run into any issues with that big project last September with them, so I guess the issue is resolved with the new hardware (at least for me).

However, your post will be good info for those using older MBP and Motion that experience this issue.
