So, importing is pretty easy. However, I am still looking for an easy way to transport complex compositions from AI to AE. Both of these applications use objects as layers but for now I simply divide all the objects and save and import them separately and then crate the animation.
I am looking for something better to save me time on re-compositing something that is already layed out in AI. Any ideas?

Do you mean, your comps are not separated out into different layers like in AI? In the import dialogue box, change the ‘import as’ toggle down menu from ‘footage’ to ‘composition’. You’ll get a folder with the separate AI layer files in, and a comp with those layers nested into it.
