Illustrator paths to motion paths in After Effects 7.0
Posted by Rob Kahn on February 10, 2007 at 5:25 amThis was easy in After Effects 6.5 but I don’t seem to be able to paste the paths from illustrator into the position keyframes in 7.0. Is this a common problem or am I just missing something?

February 10, 2007 at 3:57 pmSilly question, but are you sure you copied the actual path in illustrator?

February 11, 2007 at 2:41 pmThis has happened to me quite frequently. You aren’t alone in the problem. AE is very specific about what you must have in the clipboard, and what you must have selected in the timeline. Make sure you have AICB (or something to that effect) checked on the Illustrator Preferences, under the clipboard category. Other than that, it’s all about trial and error because in 6.5 it was too simple.

February 11, 2007 at 5:07 pmSometimes you have to restart AE before pasting from ANY other program works. Happens to me all the time.
Just in case here’s a tutorial covering the setting you need in illustrator:

February 11, 2007 at 10:45 pmThanks Aharon. The restart did the trick. I had been resorting to pasting the paths in 6.5 when needed and then opening the project in 7.0. I had in fact seen the paths tutorial and make a point of checking out all your tutorials. They’re great.
And Lazlo, it was reassuring to know I wasn’t the only one who had this issue.
Nate and taxi. Fridays are tough. I hope next week is better.

November 3, 2010 at 12:40 pmThanks for this! I just spent the last hour going nuts.
Definitely got to be some sort of bug in AE CS4
