    Hi,
I have a PDF or source art that I have to animate in AE
When I open it in Photoshop it is flattened but when I open it in illustrator there are many vector groups and the file is perfect.

But when I import the AI file into AE it is flattened. When I export from AI into a PSD it is flattened.

How do I import an AI file as I would a PSD and work will all those layers individually?

    Cheers!

this may depend a bit on versions of the software you are using, but, first you need to take the groups of vector art that you want to be on layers and put them on layers in ai.

illustrator has a function that will do this if the art is complex… select the vector art, then, from the drop down menu in the layers palette, choose release to layers (sequence, not build).

in later versions of illustrator, you will notice that the layers are contained within a parent layer. you will need to drag them out of the parent layer and delete the parent.

now save the ai file (in later versions make sure the pdf compatibility in on).

then you should be able to import the file in ae as a composition with layers in tact.

I think you saved me about 3 days of work.
Still it’s not an instant process, but that’s on adobe!
    Thanks so much!

    Cheers!
