I seem to be having trouble importing an Illustrator file into AE. It always imports as a flat object. I have text objects and plain solid colour shapes. I’ve saved it as an Ai file as well as an .eps. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I’m using Illustrator CS and AE 6.5 on a Dual 1Ghz Quicksilver with a modded 9600 card so I can run Motion.

    Thanks in advance.

so you have to import the AI file as layers or even cropped layers. You can find this in the window where you have browsed to find the AI file. If you import as “footage” you will get flat artwork.

No go. I’ve imported it using every option I could and it always comes in as a flat file.

i could think of one thing, maybe you saved all the ai elements in one layer… try saving each element in its own layer… then import it to ae as composition…try it, let’s see if that solves it…

Have you definitely got multiple layers within the illustrator doc? If not cut the elements you want as separate objects and create new layers in the layers palette to paste them into.

I can’t think why it wouldn’t work with this and the advice above

I’m new to Illustrator but ran into this too. I solved it by putting each object/group on its own layer. Then the layers come in ok when imported as a composition.

Yes I have put everything in its own layer. I think it may have something to do with CMYK and RGB colour. I’ve converted all the layers to RGB but it still won’t import.

Can you save as AI version 8?
