Illustrator Import is too large
Posted by Joe Agresta on January 16, 2011 at 3:45 pmWhenever I import an Illustrator file into Cinema 4D in comes in way too big – I mean, it’s huge. I have to adjust the scale significantly to let it fit properly on my stage. Why is this? Any advice?

January 17, 2011 at 4:02 pmI’ve wondered about this as well. I’m in R10 and in the Illustrator import pref’s it says “1” which I would think means 1:1 but a file I have is 13.75″ (inches) wide. The C4D file I have is set to pref units inches. When I merge, the AI file comes it about 306 inches.
I have an object I created w/in C4d at 13.75″ x 3.25″ x 10″ but then import the Illustrator file at the same size and they don’t match.
The real bugger is that in C4d w/units at Inches, I create a cylinder and enter 1.5 inches for diameter which the Object Properties says it is. However, it’s twice that. When I enter 1.5 in the x and y of the Size in the Coordinates palette, it sizes correctly but then the Object properties says it’s .75″.
I’d like to know why the Object Properties don’t reflect the Object size?

January 17, 2011 at 4:32 pmThe cylinder properties specify the radius, not the diameter. The diameter is twice the radius.
As far as dimensions between Illustrator and Cinema goes, it is, as they say, relative. You’re not going to get an exact match in scale between the two unless you figure out what multiple Cinema is *actually* using and then apply that when importing. Also, I believe the scale is relative to your AI document, so you would have to use the same AI document (template) to get a predictable result.
Further, prior to R12 Cinema did not use real scale values, so, for example, if you’re using meters and change the scale to inches, your objects’ dimensions won’t scale accordingly; what was a 100 meter circle will just become a 100″ circle. Starting with R12, Cinema will convert your object dimensions when you change the units.
