    Hi – newby here…

I use Illustrator 9.0 to design pictures and adverts for work. I have been asked to create a page at 300*225 pixels, and they would like to go into it half of a file which is a lot longer than this. How can I trim this picture so that I can fit it into the required size? I have tried using the cut tool, but nothing seems to happen (I can draw a line, but can’t then do anything with it!

    Many thanks for any help…

Draw a box or shape on top of your pic, where you want it cropped.

Select both the shape and the picture.

Go to menu Object > Clipping Mask > Create

You can adjust the mask path by using the direct selection tool (white arrow) to drag the points around.

Ok – so I’ve done that – now how do I get rid of the rest of the picture that I have created the mask over? (It is still there, just hidden) I need to export this picture as a bmp, and every time I do, the bmp is too small because I have this extra bit sticking out!

You need Photoshop or some other image editor to actually change the photo. Illustator can only clip/mask it.

Cheers – looks like I’ll be getting the ol’ Paint set out tomorrow, then!
