OK obviously my fonts haven’t gone anywhere but Illustrator inexplicably has misplaced them. Typically Adobe. Why has Illustrator lost the location of my fonts folder. Windows has kept and maintained a system fonts folder since Windows 2.0 that every software on the planet knows where to find. Except apparently, Adobe.

OK so any way, I’m trying to work with a new file; I copied in an object from another file and when I go to edit / create the text in my new file I go to the Characters panel, it’s empty

    Really ???? Empty ???….

OK so where is Illustrator CS6 looking for fonts and more to the point WHY is it looking for fonts instead of just loading up the default Windows font catalog like every other software on planet Earth ?

Short version… how do I get the fonts back into the characters panel ????

In theory (and in practice in most cases) Adobe reads the Windows fonts folder for fonts.

So, you don’t see any fonts in the Character panel? The pull-down list is empty?

And you’re not talking about the Character Styles panel?
