Our clients submit artwork to us, usually in Illustrator format.

I’m no graphic designer, and recently I’ve taken over for someone who left – a new function of mine is to open the artwork we get and verify that its “OK” before passing it on to our production team.

I am familiar with Photoshop, but not with Illustrator.

A major problem I am having is with linked files. Most of the files I get have layers that are linked to external .eps files. Those external files always check out and open just fine. When I open the main Illustrator file, however, I always get a dialog box that opens that says it cannot find any of the linked files. I use the option that allows me to find the linked file, but it does nothing. The linked files do not show up.

The only work around that I came up with is to open the linked file, save it as a bitmap, and then change the link in the main file to point to that bitmap.

    This cant be right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
