This is gonna be tough to esxplain, but here I go…

I created a character, a squirrel, in Illustrator for the purpose of animating him in AE. I created everything on a bunch of separate layers, mouth, eyes, head, etc. I brought him into AE as a composition and everything was fine. Then I decided to add a gradient to his tail, so I did that in Illus. Then when I opened up AE again, it couldn’t find the layers anymore. When I did a replace, it brought in all the layers, but they were blank. Now even when I try to reimport it from scratch, even just as a single layer, nothing shows up. Can’t figure out what went wrong. Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Don’t know if this helps but: try to save the ai without “use compression” checked. I had trouble in some apps with the new compression method.

Thanks Stefan. That might’ve been it. I unchecked the Use Compression box and checked the PDF Compatible box, which is usually checked, and that did it. All is well now. I’ve been using these programs for a while now and haven’t run into that issue yet. Good thing to know for the future.
