I’m trying to recreate a t-shirt design for a company and the design has a stroke which has an outer glow. Easy in Photoshop. But, I have to provide the design in Illustrator format with spot colors.

When I apply an outer glow or try drop shadow, the effect is weak. I can’t seem to get a strong glow. The line is 6pt.

However, if I try to combine two of the same effects or one Outer Glow and one Drop Shadow, the effect is really strong but not really controllable. I notice that at a blur of .88, the entire screen gets filled with the color chosen for the effect. Backing off the blur, creates a look of a 40pt stroke with a little glow/blur.

I’m just trying to discover the best way within Illustrator to create a strong outer glow/no-offset drop shadow in a spot color.

    Thanks

You could try Object->Path->Offset and make the shape a little larger. Then Effect->Blur->Gaussian Blur on the new shape. You can control size, blur size, transparency, color, everything much more precisely.
