[walter biscardi] “I’m not even going to repeat what the Apple tech said when he saw the i7 truly did not support Jumbo Frames, but it was funny. “

Aww, c’mon! Such a tease… Can you paraphrase, i.e. did he make a reference to male bovine excrement?

Not on a public forum. I like the guys at my local Apple Store, they have always done right by me.

    Walter,

Will my early 2008 Penryn Core 2 duo 2.5ghz Macbook Pro support ethernet SAN? Also, can you provide a link for recommended SAN set up? thanks.

It’s my understanding all Core Duo machines work. My MacBook Pro 2.33 Intel Core 2 Duo works fine as do all the other machines in our office.

Here’s my article on the Final Share SAN setup.

Small Tree has a similar setup and they also supply the ethernet cards / switches and network know-how that make the Final Share system work.

I was really disappointed when I found this out. I bought 3 (yes, 3!) i7 iMacs for my small studio and then realized I couldn’t turn on Jumbo Frames and so am having to sell them all on craigslist! Super drag. And now I’m buying the 3.33 Core 2 Duo’s to replace them, and they come out to be only $150 less than the i7’s (once you upgrade to the graphics card that comes in the i7).
It’s painful to spend so much on a Core 2 Duo when the i7 is out there to buy, but I can’t have it on my network.

What’s really frustrating is that I can’t keep these iMacs around even as simple design stations. My understanding is that as long as they are on the network, if Jumbo Frames are enabled on some machines but not all, then I’ll run into big problems.
    This is true, yes?

I’m now very curious if the new i7 Macbook Pros will support Jumbo Frames?
No where does it state whether they do or don’t, and as mentioned above, this seems to be a shocker even to the Apple employees. When I was on the phone with “enterprise level” tech support at Apple, the guy didn’t believe me about the i7’s not supporting jumbo until he looked it up himself.

As I noted in that thread that’s not a solution nor is it truly Jumbo Frames. Your speeds are half of what they should be.

How does the iMac 27″ 3,33GHz C2D compare to the i7 in general performance?
Do you really notice the ‘slower’ CPU?
I am trying to decide if the benefit of this increase in network performance outweighs the drawback of the slower CPU.
