  • if trans-coding before editing – color correct before transcoding or after?

Posted by Don Cobble on April 30, 2017 at 2:50 am

I have to trans-code most of the footage i receive to make it cross platform.

    It come as GV HQX 1080 59.94 10bit I am trans-coding to DNxHD 1080 29.97P

After tons of render test for both speed / size and quality, I landed on DNxHD to be the most versatile for the different editor MAC & PCs.

The question is a “Quality for editing Question?
I use my Vegas to trans-code, should I do my basic color matching before or after trans- coding

    Thank You
    Don

    Hi Don

I would do it before. There is always a certain amount of loss every time your file is processed, regardless.

Way better to start off with as decent of a picture as possible.

Remember that you will be going from 59.94 down to 29.97.

You can always do some fine tuning afterwards.

    Cheers !

I would do some gradient tests when using vegas to process to DNxHR from a 10-bit source. I might be wrong, but I think there is a problem with quicktime not passing the 10bit info through the workflow. Regardless you need to do your processing in 32-bit video levels.

Resolve, or FFMPEG transcode might be better.
