  • IF CAPTURING VIDEO ON A MACPRO, USE THE BACK PORT

Here’s a little time-saver for anyone having issues with dropped frames while capturing video to a (first generation) MacPro – After a few hours of trouble-shooting over the phone with Apple, we discovered that the FRONT Firewire port is slower than the BACK (due to the way it is connected to the logic board) – So, if you’re capturing video via firewire and having dropped frame issues, USE THE BACK PORT. Just thought I’d pass that along…

Interesting, we’ve captured to both here with no issues.

Ditto. This also begs the question what goes into the back port, the deck, or the drive? As it stands right now, on my dual 2ghz macpro I have the DSR-11 attached to the back, and the FW400 drive attached to the front port. No problems at all.

Is mine a 2nd generation? Is there a 2nd gen MacPro? Just got mine in January.

Hmmm.. I’m not sure – All I know is that it definitely solved the problem when I used the back port (both from a deck and camera firewire), and the support person I was dealing with at Apple spoke to his superiors, who confirmed there were problems with the front firewire ports of the first MacPros – They said they had the same problems with the G5d when they came out – Either way, it’s good you guys didn’t run into any problems, I just thought I’d share for those who were struggling with this issue 🙂

Are you plugging the camera and the deck into the same port? Via daisy chain? Perhaps the front is slower and just can’t handle the daisy chain. I’ve got a deck in the back an drive in the front.
