ID’ing used clips in browser
Posted by Bob O’brien on August 29, 2006 at 2:08 pmIs there a way to somehow mark a clip in the browser through shading, tinting or some other noticable identifier that would indicate that the clip has already been used in the timeline?
Is there a tool that will do this for you (by automatically comparing the browser and the timeline)?
If not, that would make a useful tool for a future update.
Thanks!
Bob

Just select the clip / clips you’re trying to find in your timeline, control-click (or right click) them, and go to label at the bottom of the menu. Pick whichever color you like. They have marked meanings in FCP, but they really just mean whatever you make them mean.Zak

August 29, 2006 at 2:38 pmSeems I was a little too quick to respond… Now that I’ve read the second part of your post, I don’t know of a tool that does exactly what you’re asking. The method I suggested may be time and effort prohibitive if you have a lot of clips to find and mark.

Here’s what I do. I use the “Good” column to mark my used clips. That’s not the intended use for this but if everybody is on the same page with you, then its not confusing.

August 29, 2006 at 3:28 pmAll great suggestions- thanks – but I don’t think any of these suggestions will accomplish what I want.
Let’s say I have 50 clips in a bin… in poster view. I would love if there was a way that Final Cut would automatically highlight each clip in my bin as I added it to the timeline. That way I could easily see what’s been used and what still rermains.

August 29, 2006 at 3:40 pmDave’s idea will do just that if he had finished the thought. Once you have the bin of used clips, select them all and change their label color to whatever you like. It will label them in the bins and the timeline.
There is no automated process. I suppose it’s possible, but would be complex since clips can be used in many different timelines, across many different proejcts.

September 3, 2006 at 12:51 pmI suppose you know about the “show duplicate frames” in the timeline feature. I know your question referred to bins and not the timeline, but with this feature activated at least you can avoid using the same shot twice in your program. I asked your precise question once and I was told that there is no feature like that right now on FCP. I’ve added it to my wish list.
