Ideas for studio lighting
We have a small 3 wall Cyc… 10′ by 12′ by 10′ and are looking for some ideas for lighting the wall by hanging flourescnts above so that we can then light our talent in front without the worry of nasty shadows.

That’s a very small space! I hope your subject is table top or miniatures. It sounds like you are aware of the inherent problem of keeping the shadows of the foreground off the set walls. Obviously getting the lights high and driving the shadows down towards the floor would be a solution, but this is never the best place for portraiture lighting. Using soft light sources at least creates shadows with soft edges, so fluorescents like Kino Flo would be a good starting point. Dennis asks appropriately what is your budget, but to me I need to know what is your subject? What do you intend to stage in this tiny three wall world?

so here is the skinny… we are shooting spots for a tv show and commercials that will entail the white infinity wall look with talent appearing from the waste up…no more than 2 persons and maybe a Flatscreen TV as a prop in there. It is tight, but alas it is the only space available to us. Our budget is ..well.. shall we say.. Home Depot at this point as this space will be torn down in several months once the shooting is complete. We were going to go with some std flor lights T8 35 watt/bulb with total of 8-12 lamps all around the top edges of the wall and then gell it with a 1/4 minus green gell.

The great thing about good quality studio fixtures (or even location fixtures) is that their initial investment always pays off ….and you can use them in many different places. Buy yourself some Kino-Flos, and then you can still use them in the next studio.
