Based on Nick’s smoke workflow, it seems that Resolve is ok with referenced media.
I wonder if we could apply the principal to other editing platforms?

    For example…

    FCP:

    • Export timeline instantly via save as, (making reference QT, not self contained.)
    • leave 10 min of black on the end for safety.
    • Export EDL
    • Resolve preconfoms reference QT based on EDL

Changes to picture would happen in FCP, and updated into resolve by EDL. Titles/etc could be included/excluded on a separate layer.

    Thoughts?

For final cut projets, I have been media managing a copy of the timeline to the codec I want to color in with 12 frame handles. I then export an edl for resolve. In resolve, I import all the clips from the media managed copy. Conform from an edl to get all the cuts in the right order. Then I color everything and render out in source mode. That maintains the source timecode and tape names/file names. I then take the graded files and relink in FCP to those CC files. Then out put from FCP.

If the cut changes, I just import the new shots into resolve and conform from a new edl. Render out the new shots and relink in FCP. Not the smoothes workflow, but it is accurate.

    Hope that helps.

Yeah I’m doing the same workflow.

I kinda like the idea of the reference workflow cause you don’t have to media manage, and you don’t have to check the final version for stuff like FCP MM screwups (i.e. timewarps, slipped frames, wrong fonts). Or have to deal with Avid_MediaFiles folders.

Are you building your EDL’s without dissolves? I find that if I include dissolves and then expand with handles, Resolve is building duplicate lengthened clips for the dissolve portion of the cut.

Nick, how are you getting around the 8 character filenames in an EDL?
