ID Matte and 16/32 bit
Posted by Amit Zinman on April 29, 2008 at 6:38 amHi,
I’ve been using ID Matte for my 3DMax/AE projects. However, for some reason, it only does 8 bit. Is there an alternative?Amit

April 29, 2008 at 5:27 pmI am trying to avoid working in 8-bit, and it would be difficult for me to convince the 3dmax people to change the way they do things since I am merely a freelancer. I was hoping to locate a third party tool.

Which is a good idea when you’re dealing with additional channels out of 3D renders. The more information the better!
If I understand the ID matte properly, a work around might be to extract the ID channel. Then use Curves to push all values to black except the value you want to reveal and then use that image as a luma matte or as the input for a Channel > Set Matte effect.
The curves effect you use might end up looking something like this:

It seems odd that Adobe hasn’t enabled the 3D Channel effects for 16/32bpc… I would think they’d be some of the most important candidates.
