  • i7 quad vs Xeon dual for video processing and audio sequencing.. ??

Posted by Jean-pierre Desrochers on December 5, 2014 at 2:56 pm

I’m about to build a new PC station in the next weeks
to use Sony Vegas Pro and an audio sequencer (Cakewalk Sonar X4).
The machine will have at least 16gigs of RAM.
I’ve been browsing the net since 2 days to check
what processor would be the best (cost/speed)..
i7 quad core vs Xeon dual core are my possible choices..
Most of the post I found are at least 2-3 years old..
What are the good choice for today (dec 2014) ?
And the final PC cabinet would need to be ‘quiet’.
    Thanks for your help.

Xeon dual core, without a shadow of a doubt!

FYI, I have bought recently on eBay a Dell T3500 with a six-core (12 threads) Xeon X5650 and 15GB ram for $330. It also came with a Quadro FX3800 video card (older but is working in MainConcept encoder).
Now, the cheaper Xeons are actually not that different from I7… so depending on what you are looking for, the I7 might be a better choice.

keep in mind also, Vegas’s strength lies in the Processing Power.

Ok so if I figure to move on with a Xeon dual core
what would be a good motherboard choice for me.
I really like the Asus ones but cannot tell
    which one I could use..

    Any suggestions ?
