  • I would like to animate a ring whilst keeping a stroke

    Ahem,

I had to be careful writing that title..

I am trying to animate a 2 halves of a circle, so that as one half grows, the other half shrinks.

I am replicating possession in a sports game – so it starts off at 50% each and then over the course of a second or 2 one half will grow whilst the other will shrink.

Now I would like this to be a ring, not a circle with a white stroke all around it – like this picture but animated

Now I created a circle, took off the fill and increased the stroke until it was very thick. I then duplicated it and increased the background layer to white and increased it to give the stroke effect. I then changed it to ‘Trim Paths’ so I could animate the ring but unfortunately the white outline that I want does not appear at the start and end

Does anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks in advance

This is probably simpler than you think.

    1. Create a shape layer with an ellipse. Turn off the fill, increase the stroke, change stroke colour to what you want.
    2. Add trim paths to ellipse. This is probably where you are at the moment. This will allow you to animate a plain colour stroke.

    3. Duplicate ellipse, change its colour and alter the trim path to suit.

    4. Create a null layer and add a slider, link the parameters.

I’m guessing that so far you have already done something similar to the above.

Now, click on the shape layer, then choose from the menu: Layer -> Layer Styles -> stroke

This has applied a stroke to the shape layer. Now alter the colour and size to suit. I have attached an example project. In this project, the null object has a slider which will change the relative size of each half.

    Perfect!

    Thank you Declan.

It was as simple as adding a stroke layer to the shape!

I’m very new to After Effects…
