I want to buy some more memory?
Posted by Stevejr on May 31, 2005 at 3:20 pmHi, I am new to the Mac and Final Cut Pro.
After NAB I made the switch. Avid even their lower end system is way to expensive. Anyway, I am looking to get some more memory for my new g5 2.7 computer. Does anyone know where the best place is to buy memory for cheaper prices. Apple list new memory for too much money. Is their a good online site that sells memory. May 31, 2005 at 3:29 pmFYI, G5’s run their best with matched RAM so whenever I purchase a mew Mac, I purchase with the bare minimum RAM, then replace all of it with Crucial’s.
For instance, I picked up a Dual 2.0 last month and then ordered 4GB RAM from Crucial. When the G5 showed up, I pulled out the RAM supplied by Apple and put all Crucial RAM in.

May 31, 2005 at 3:49 pmApple claims that their computers work better with their own memory. How good is Crucial compared to apple. My computer is for high end video editing. Also I noticed that Crucial is pretty cheap. Can I add on Crucial memory to my already mac memory and will it preform good still. Sorry if I am asking elementary questions but I am new to the world of Mac.

Crucial came highly recommended a few years ago from a buddy who sells high end High Def systems and runs his own High Def shop with Final Cut Pro systems. It’s all I’ve purchased for the past two years for all of my Mac’s.
I run two G5 uncompressed systems, one of which is High Def and RAM is not an issue.

“Hi Walter,
I think that refers to matched PAIR’s of RAM chips. Not every single RAM chip in the computer.
I always add Crucial RAM to the RAM that comes with the Mac and have never had a problem.

May 31, 2005 at 4:17 pmI have Crucial mixed with Apple memory on both my G5 and Powerbook, and both work flawlessly. I haven’t seen any concrete proof that mixing memory causes problems. I think it is just a theory.

May 31, 2005 at 4:39 pmAnother questions,
How much ram does a computer system have to have to be really fast when it comes to rendering. I have clients come over and work with me as I edit at times. I am hoping to get the fastest that I can get, but is their a difference in rendering speed between 4 gigs and 8 gigs. Or for that matter what is the difference between 2 gigs and 4 gigs in speed. I plan on useing after affects and useing this computer for 3d rendering as well at times.

actually no, the recommendation to me was matched RAM, matched Pair’s throughout the machine. Remove the Apple RAM and replace it with all matched RAM and preferrably from the same set.
You don’t need to follow that recommendation. I’m just letting you know this is what was recommended to me and I have followed that advice with the last three computer purchases.

Render speeds are affected by CPU and soon the Graphics card will also play into that. RAM does not affect render speed.
