I use PC!!! Convert Me
Posted by Grady Knight on April 22, 2008 at 7:13 amI have been a PC user forever. Have been editing with Avid Liquid, started back with Pinnacle Liquid 5.
I am getting a new computer in a couple of months and am considering changing to a Mac with FCPro.
Why should I do this?
I just got a Cannon XH A1 and am starting a new HD documentary for TV project.
What would be the best setup to get?
Thanks in advance.

April 22, 2008 at 7:42 amI can probably spend 3-4000 on the computer and about 2500 on the software. I plan to use tha Mac for video and other graphics.
What does one need to get along with FCP to be able to put out Blu-Ray discs?
Would I need a seperate authoring program?
What about FX?
Thanks.8mm & 16mm film to DVD

A Blu-Ray burner…about $500-$600, then Adobe Enore…ONLY available as part of Adobe Creative Suite 3…$1600. I know…I know…

Hi Grady
Would you dare to work with a PC in a country with no PC service?
I’m working with Mac in a country without Apple service. One time needed in seven (7) years.
“Peace of mind” is a priceless feature.
My only advice if you go to Mac is that you try to get a basic understanding on how to keep your Mac OsX optimized.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17″
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table. -

April 22, 2008 at 9:25 amI use a MacPro with boot camp so I can enjoy the best of both Windows and OSX programs. Edius Pro flies on the Windows XP system with much improved real time and rendering performance than FCP, but Final Cut Studio has more very specialist tools such as Color and DVD Studio Pro, should you need them. 95% of my work is done on Edius.

First of all, there are thousands of posts on this very forum with a ton of information regarding Final Cut Pro, Switching to a Mac and Mac vs. PC. Have you done any homework and Searched the posts going back at least one year? I’m willing to bet most of your answers are found there.
This is a discussion that comes up so much we really should have a FAQ just for this subject.

Actually, you can just buy Premiere Pro for $799 and get Encore with it.
To the original poster–what are you needing that your current software isn’t giving you? Or are you just wanting to change software fro the sake of changing software?
If you need more advanced color correction, Color will give you that.
If you need advanced compositing and effects software, After Effects and the rest of the Adobe suite will give you that.
Otherwise, FCP is a very powerful suite of applications, but if you’ve never used a Mac before you might be frustrated for a while as you figure out the differences between Windows and OSX. But like others have mentioned, you can always dual boot into Windows to still run any Windows programs you own (probably including Avid Liquid).
Good luck!
Michael.

Yep, that is correct. You only need Premiere. But if you own a Mac copy of Photoshop or After Effects, you can get a very nice upgrade price to the full Production Premium bundle. That’s what we did here.
And Encore works beautifully for BluRay.

April 22, 2008 at 2:45 pmI have not bothered to read the whole thread.
Do not change platforms if you enjoy working with your existing tools. If your workflow makes economic and creative sense, stick with it.
The myths about Macintosh—good and bad— are as silly and unfounded as the myths about Windows. The myths about FCP are equally bogus. However, if you can get someone to buy these new toys for you and then pay you to learn how to use them (and it ain’t easy to forget PC/Avid), go for it.
