  • I updated Vegas Pro from 10d to 10e and now it won’t even load

    Hi everybody,

I opened Vegas Pro 10d yesterday to get back to work on a fairly large project. It popped up with the new update to 10e, so I selected it and downloaded it. I saved it on my desktop until this evening. I ran the file, it says it detected a previous version and it will be upgrading. The upgrade seemed to go flawlessly, that is until it was done and I actually tried loading Vegas.

I click on the icon, the hourglass twirls for about 2 seconds, then nothing. I go directly into the folder where Vegas is installed…same thing.

This is NOT a permissions thing or an admin thing or anything like that…it just simply will not run. I also don’t believe any Sony Services of any kind are running that would make it think it is already loaded. I would like to say I am shocked, but this is not the first time this has happened to me with a Vegas product. I really thought 10e documentation addressed all of the bugs and issues I was having with 10d, and I am sure it handles them nicely…now if the program would just load.

Any ideas? Your help, as always fantastic COW folk, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks!!

PS – oh…shouldn’t matter, but this is Windows 7, 64bit. And my 10d ran flawlessly apart from crashing in relation to 3rd party plugins.

    WELCOME TO SONY VEGAS!!!!

I’ve been dealing with this crap from Sony forever.
I’ve given Sony 5 years and over $2,000 dollars of money, and COUNTLESS HOURS recovering from CRASHES and FREEZES.

I run a professional video production studio and had hopes for Sony. But at this point they had their chance to earn me as a user and customer.
    THEY FAILED.

I understand any NLE can have issues, but this is absurdity beyond comprehension.

I’m running a professionally built WINDOWS 7 Professional 64 BIT editing station. Intel I-5, 8GB of ram, Nvidia GTX560 1GB GPU, 5TB of hard discs. All drivers and patches installed. All full clean installs, with limited software only to Video editing.

Sony Vegas Pro 10.e crashes, freezes, and locks constantly. It’s so bad I CAN’T EDIT with it and had to go back to my XP Pro 32 bit system just to get my editing completed.

I gave Sony 5 years of my time and money to earn me as a user and customer, but they have FAILED miserably.

I’m now looking into switching to another NLE that will allow me to edit constantly with stability.

Sony, you failed to provide a truly “PRO” software product, and you failed to keep me as a user.

    Tom,
Some time back, I was told by SONY to lower the error reporting level to see if Vegas will launch or not crash as often.

Go to your Vegas install folder and look for PRSConfig.exe (I assume it exists in 64bit).

Run it and lower the detection level. Mine, on 32bit XP, is set at FULL. Lower it to COMPATIBLE or DISABLED and see what happens. Don’t forget to set it back at some point.

    Failing that, call support.

    Cheers for now,

    Tom,
Uninstall Vegas Completely, then go in the registry “regedit
(Hope you are familiar with this process) and delete all the keys
(folders) pertaining to Vegas only…..Then Reinstall Vegas,
you should be good to go.

Aaron, Sorry about your frustrations…Vegas 10.0e is now solid for me, but that’s life….Wonder if you are planning to switch to FCPX.

    Tom,

Mine didn’t load either. I did get the splash screen and I knew that it froze on video plugins. I renamed my Newblue folder and Vegas fired right up. I removed and installed again the Newblue plugins. everything is back to normal now.

I’m looking at a few different NLE options, Avid being one of them.
I’ve spent a good amount of money on my PC setup, so switching to a MAC platform would be a complete switch over.

I was a freelance editor on Avids for years so that would make sense for me. I never had issues with Avids other than Hard Drives taking a dump which wasn’t the software’s fault.

Hmmm. well, I think I’ll install it on my laptop first before just upgrading. Has Boris made a statement about compatability yet? How about Frederick B. who did the wonderful little white balance color correction add on?

I always like to wait a month before installing anything, unless it fixes a flaw I’m waiting to have fixed. Unless Vegas’ team is some gigantic high rise full of people, I would have to assume that their test teams are pretty small. Trying to do a test with all possible scenarios of gear is, to say the least, difficult.

It’s one of the nightmares of Windows that, unlike the Mac, they can’t control the vast array of hardware and software build possibilities.

It’s been odd, my 10.d has been extremely stable for me, for reasons that I can’t figure, so I’m not likely to just jump on some new build because it’s new. I just completed a job with five different cameras, four different video codecs, and it didn’t hiccup at all. I multicam(ed) 7D, T2i (same codec), Canon MXF, and JVC MOV files, on one timeline, then added AVCHD intro footage with Green screen handled by Boris. No crashes.

Someone not long ago on this board discussed doing upgrades by taking a system image in Windows of your OS drive (i.e. C:) and then swapping the drives out, doing the upgrade, and seeing what happens. If it all works, then you can swap the drives back and do the ‘real’ upgrade. I would make sure you have two of the same drives. Restore points don’t always work. But you should be able to do a restore point back to where you were just before the upgrade. I’ll likely be doing that for this upgrade.

That could have been me since I have my boot drive in a drive caddy. It’s wired internally, but I can open a door and swap my boor drives.

But, I have so much confidence in Sony Vegas, I do my upgrades in mid-project without hesitation. I’ve never been sorry.

Thanks, Tom! I had the same “no loading” issue with the 64-bit version 10e. Your fix worked!

In your post you suggest not forgetting to set the detection level back at some point. Any reason why that would be preferred?

I’m not going to rant and rave about Vegas, as some are doing. I’ve been using it without problems for years, through numerous versions. However, I have to admit that version 11 has been very buggy and crashes frequently with 3rd party plug-ins.

    Doug,
The only reason, back then, I suggested setting it back to FULL, was that if SONY released another update, the problem bypassed might have been fixed.

Since there are no more v10 updates coming, leave it where it is, if it works for you.

    Cheers for now,
