I Tunes
Posted by Carlton Hathcoat on March 11, 2009 at 2:55 pmI am trying to use a popular song I downloaded from I Tunes and when I try to import it into FCP it says it’s an unsupportable format. I understand that I Tunes doesn’t want piracy, but does anyone know a way I can make this a regular mp3 file, or any other so I can use it for my music bed?

Because unless you have the sync license, it’s illegal to edit or use copyrighted music in a project.

March 11, 2009 at 3:08 pmI understand that, I am just trying to use some music I downloaded to make a video for a family member, so it’s not to be used for anything other than that. Funny, I tried to go to a store and simply buy the cd, it’s amazing how few CDs are out there these days, I will just have to buy on Amazon, was hoping to start editing today. Thanks.

March 11, 2009 at 6:42 pmYou can have even more fun by composing original music in Garage Band and using that.
Then if the music is really good, you might make money selling it at Itunes some day.

March 12, 2009 at 3:29 amiTunes will be DRM free very soon…so the technical issue will be moot (though the legal issue will remain).
It’s considered inappropriate (and possibly illegal) for us to tell you how to get around the DRM issue on this forum (though the answer to the problem is so obvious that you aren’t thinking of it…just use the Google and you will find it elsewhere).

Technically it is. People do it all the time, but you’re supposed to acquire the rights first.

March 12, 2009 at 9:06 pmDon’t use iTunes, pull the track directly from your CD. You shouldn’t use mp3 quality audio… it should be wav or aif.
If its not copyright-protected on iTunes, you can export as an *.aif.
There are all kinds of audio software tools that can help you capture that audio despite the protections on it… I like to scour versiontracker.com for cool new apps. Audio Hijack is a good one, you can capture your own system audio (if iTunes is playing), or internet audio, for instance.
I’m not trying to help people become pirates, but I was a student once, and know that certain songs certainly help a project… if its allowable by the Teach Act or for personal use, not a big deal.
