    Hey everyone.
Had my first shoot with my new HMC150. I had seen podcasts and heard friends talk about using Adobe’s products to edit native AVCHD files.

Ok, great. I stuck the SDHC card in my MacPro… copied over MTS files… Opened Premiere CS5… import … aaaaaand. Nope.

    So for 1080p/24 … on a 2.8 8Core MacPro, 6.5 GB RAM, Mac os 10.5.8, FCP 6 *OR* Premiere Pro CS5…
    now what?

I just want to FIRST get raw footage in, stamp a time code reader on it, and kick out a quick DVD.

ALWAYs worked in DV before (and in FCP). I’m brand new to AVCHD and HD in general. Thanks!

    Can you describe NADA?

    does it not show up?

    is it slow?

Are you using the Trial or a full copy?

    PPro only or Production Premium?

Well, I’m using the CS5 Master Collection – Right now, it’s operating on trial mode until I dig up the code and finally input it… but it was installed from bona fide discs.

Now it’s my first time opening Premiere but I’m familiar with some of the After Effects parallels… so, I double clicked in the project window to import my footage. I navigate to the .mts files that I just copied over, but once selected, I get a “File Import Failure” window. Error Message: The file has an unsupported compression type.

I did go all out… 1080p/24 for this shoot. Probably prematurely, being so new to the Panasonic HMC150’s files that it creates… but … well, ya gotta jump in sometime 😉

    Thanks

I have successfully opened AVCHD files from my Canon DVR with no problems in PP CS4. Adobe’s web site implies that it oughta work for you:

Have you tried importing the files via the Media Browser? (Window | Media Browser)

Mpeg codecs precluded for licensing reasons in trial! You will need to enter s/n for avchd editing!

    Well, whadyouknow! That was it!

That’s so interesting … with all the codecs and all the companies that own them… doesn’t surprise me… but wow, what a nice piece of trivia to now have under my hat!

    Thanks gerwyn!

It looks like you figured it out, but here’s the information for others coming to this thread:

Well, I have a similar issue, but I’m using a fully licensed Master Collection of CS5. I have successfully been working with After Effects and AVCHD files (.MTS, recorded on a Canon HFS-100) with no trouble, importing, working with them on the timeline, you name it. In CS4 I have no problem importing and working with the MTS files from this camera. But in CS5… no luck. There should be no limitations with this, everything is licensed and up to date.

I can’t import them by dragging and dropping, using File > Import, nor the media browser, I get the “unsupported compression type” every time. This is REALLY a problem – can anyone help? Todd, you’re the MAN on this stuff (especially after seeing you in action at NAB)… any help would be greatly appreciated!

There’s a glitch in one of the updates that sometimes causes Premiere Pro CS5 to revert to acting like it’s in trial mode. The solution, unfortunately, is to uninstall CS5 and then reinstall.

Before you take that step, check to see if you have the sequence presets that are excluded from the trial version—such as the AVCHD and RED sequence presets. If those are missing, then you’ve been bitten by the bug that I mentioned.

Interestingly, I checked my Sequence presets, and I have the AVCHD ones… but no RED presets. Have I been bitten? If so, should I uninstall, run the Creative Suite Cleaner, and then reinstall? Or is there an easier way, such as just reinstalling those presets?

    > If so, should I uninstall, run the Creative Suite Cleaner, and then reinstall?

    Yes.

    > Or is there an easier way, such as just reinstalling those presets?

No. The missing presets are a symptom, not the problem.
