  • I there a proper way to import a sequence from another project?

Posted by Michael Allen on July 9, 2009 at 1:03 pm

I have been using FCP for a while now but have not had the need to import a sequence form a different project into a new project. Is there a proper way to do this? I tried a simple copy sequence, close project, open new project and paste. This copy and paste method worked, however I do not know if this is the correct way to do this. Can this cause any problems?

In the past, I would export a self contained movie and work from that. In this case it would be better to import the complete sequence. Thanks for the help in advance.

You can actually open both projects at the same time and just drag the sequence (or anything in the Browser) from one project to the other.

Just keep in mind that all your media doesn’t copy with the Sequence to the new Sequence. All of the media will still be in the original Capture Scratch / Render Files, etc… So if you erase any media from the original media folders, they will go offline in the new project as well.

I would add that after you bring the sequence into the new project you should make master clips in the browser for the material that’s in the sequence. In the current version there is a function that will do this automatically.

    All the best,

Thanks for helping out so quickly. I did not think to open two projects at once. This will help out alot.

If you don’t have access to both projects, you can export the sequence as an XML, zip it and email it to the other party who will then import an XML. You can do this with bins, media, anything in the Browser essentially.

I really would like to nest one project into another. Is there any way of doing that?
