    Ho.. ly… Sh*t.

    I’m devastated. Completely smashed. Drained from energy.

    I’ve had one techincal issue after another and where I could fix the internet and my headset I JUST CAN’T seem to fix Sony Vegas Pro 12.

    Okay here we go:

    There is a lot going on here. Let me just address the issues at hand at first:

    1: When I render my files turns out darker than they originally are.
    1.a: When I try to use any kind of “lightening” effect to light it
    up it ruins my before great quality of 1080p HD. It makes it
    sort of grainy.

    2: This problems is kind of why I have problem number three. More or less unrelated to SVP12 however. I’ve begun doing LP and it’s actually going great and people have been really positive about my content. So, naturally, that motivates me to venture on.
    So. After just having finished Anna – Extended Edition, I decided to go for Shadow Warrior w/ facecam. I installed the game, turned FRAPS on, and were good to go. But. Hmm.. It seemed a bit laggy. Wow, actually very laggy. So laggy that I couldn’t play. So I went out and grabbed myself a copy of Dxtory. It had pretty good rumours, yes I had to do ALOT of reading to find out to use it but I made it work in the end.
    I record and it lags. A LOT. So after more researching I find out that I should download Lagarith Lossless Package (something like that I reckon). I do that. My game is super smooth. Finally! However:
    2.a: My Dxtory stops recording every 3,99 GB. I can find NO ONE
    with this problem. It doesn’t continue recording and use a
    different file like FRAPS, no, it just stops. Other people,
    as far as I understand, just get one long clip. Preferable,
    to having to press the record button to start and stop the
    recording every 2 min just to be sure that it does in fact
    record.

    3: Apparently. The only files (don’t know how it is for FRAPS) that Dxtory can record is rawcap and AVI. Rawcap is a tool (I think) so that you can make it into AVI later on and save recording/writing space. I suppose. Anyways, that leads me to AVI anyway which is cool. I can chose multiple sound channels. 1 for my microphone, and 1 for my in-game sound. (However I found that the sound could be better. So I found audacity. Anyone knows if I can record that when I play? Does it have a limited time of recording or something like that?). The real bugger here is:
    My. Sony. Vegas. HATES. DESPITES. AVI files. I’ve never, NEVER, seen so much lag in SVP. It’s ridiculous. I have to prerender everything if I just want a TINY change of being able to edit ANYTHING. Even when I do this, it tends (very often – very) to lag. Even after I used shift+b. What?!
    3.a: Nah-uh. I got more. When I render my videos (I used
    Videos4Youtube – an extension). It, even, lags in the rendered
    file.. Now the weird thing here is; that my webcam (as I told
    you, it was w/ facecam) does NOT lag. So I really assume that
    it’s something about these pesky AVI files.

    I’ve also tried rendering with something else than Videos4Youtube.

    I’ve tried EVERYTHING. I mean litteraly ANYTHING – except adressing the problem myself in the form of a forum. I’ve tried Google, YouTube, reading the SVP 12 manual, CreativeCOW, and other forums and more and more and more. I’m at the end of my road. I need some help.

    Okay I dicussed this with a new-made friend on YouTube and it seems it’s my footage itself that’s laggy.

    Any suggestions to what I should do in the future?

    And any suggestions to what I can do to save what I got?

    As for why your videos get darker, this is probably because your camera outputs full range data (0-255) and most players assume a smaller video range (16-235) by default (if they have an option). On playback the players expand the range back to 0-255 because this is what computer monitors want.

    Assuming your camera source is full range then…
    On the output video fx, you can add, Sony Levels with the Computer to Studio RGB preset.

    This will make the preview window in Vegas look a little washed out. I normally level the levels setting on and let it be washed out. Except of course when I am making color and contrast judgements.

    Yes, you have to make sure your levels are correct for correct playback. Rec 709 is the color standard for HD and in 8-bit digital form they specify that levels are to be 16-235. Full range is 0-255.

    Now it gets fuzzy and loose with “standards”. AVC (H.264) video stream support a flag which denotes if the contained data is full range. Many cameras output full range data and set this flag and the Vegas decoder handles this. They probably output full range because maybe you can adjust better before final output which might be 16-235.

    Some players/decoders may not look at this flag and assume a Rec 709 encoded file is 16-235. Here you will have a problem with playback if you have a full range file.

    Some editors like Premiere always normalize input to 16-235. Vegas does not. This gives access to the full camera range data but then puts the burden on you to get a proper range on output. Whatever that may be and whatever those requirements are.

    Also, I have no idea if the AVC encoders in Vegas support both full range and Studio (16-235) range or if they always assume 16-235. I have not tested.

    I just make sure my output will always be 16-235 and this means I have to add a levels adjustment to the output. Either Computer to Studio, or studio to computer depending on the situation. It is a pain, yes, and there are ways Vegas could add options to help us. It is what it is and we have to deal with.

    Lots of data presented there, but one big missing item: when you’re capturing video and hitting that 3.99GB limit… what device is it writing to? Writing uncompressed HD at 60p is not an exercise for the weak of heart… you would need about 380MB/s of sustained throughput to do that to a single drive in real time. You should check into the kind of compressed video available, and how that matches your HDDs.

    And if you’re writing to a 32-bit file system (eg, not NTFS or exFAT), you are pretty much getting some kind of error at 3.99GB… or perhaps just rolling over and over-writing the start of the file, depending on the software. You need a 64-bit file system. Assuming other users are not having this problem, that’s the thing to look for.
