Thank you for that. I do have Flip for Mac pro and it plays the sample but I’m trying to figure out how to build the files for the advertising venue to show on their screens. Does Flip for Mac Pro do that or does it just play?

You’re asking how to do motion graphics? Just Keyframe each element you want to move. Optimally in Motion, but if this is the bar you have to achieve FCP X is fine.

You’ll need flip 4 Mac pro to encode WMV files. The studio or pro version. That’s the most difficult part of this operation.

Check out the App on the mac app store called ‘Any Video Converter HD”. Use the Xbox 720p settings and it’ll create a 720p WMV in no time.

Bret so I understand is what i’m looking for as simple as putting a picture in FCPX then moving in Text to a spot then turning that into a wmv file?

I never been asked for this before.

You’ve never animated a single word of text? You’ve never imported a graphic? You’ve never exported to a codec or format? This is beyond the scope of a thread post. You should probably take some FCP 101 training that focuses on text or motion graphics. But yes that all there is to it basically. But what is your client giving you? Illustrator files? PSD files? JPGs? All stuff to consider and possibly other apps to acquire and utilize.

Steve, I *think* the way you’re approaching this might be a bit confused.

There are basically 3 parts to this thing.

First, creating the graphics.
Second. moving the graphics over time.
Third: outputting a file in the proper size, framerate, and coded needed for playback.

If it’s just text, then creating the graphic files is pretty much as simple as typing the text. You can do that directly in FCP X. You want to have the “output” raster size and resolution in mind, because you’ll want to make the file compatible with the screen it will eventually play out on.

When the type is on the screen, you can also use X to annimate the path of the text across the screen. X has perfectly usable annimation abilities for basic 2d moves. You just set keyframes for the starting and ending positions – and the program calculates the moves. This is BASIC stuff in the Transform menu of X.

Finally, you need to export the video file. Apple owns Quicktime and licenses H-264 for internal use, but does NOT export Windows filess without a third party transcoder. But all you do is make a quicktime master, then take that into one of the programs like Flip for Mac, Telestream Episode, or another of the many transcoders that can translate the QT file into a WMV file.

It’s really not particularly complicated.
