I need help with Audiosuite
Though I have used Avid Xpress Pro for about two years, I still don’t know much about it. The project I am working on right now has some clips that need serious audio help. I know there is an Audiosuite plug-in that takes out all background noise below a certain level, but is there a tool that will help with background noise that is actually louder than the important part of the audio – the people talking? The video can’t be shot again, so will I just have to live with the background sound of chirping crickets overpowering the sound of the subjects’ voices?

Unfortunately, there is no ‘magic bullet’ in the audio suite. You could try playing with the parametric EQ, trying to find the spot where the crickets chirp. With the audiosuite window open, go to the fast menu (also known as a hamburger menu, because it looks like, well, a hamburger) and select the parametric EQ. As long as the correct audio tracks are active, you’ll see the EQ icon show up on the timeline. Within the audiosuite window, click on the large plugin button (I’m not sure of the exact location as I’m not in front of a machine, but I believ it’s toward the middle center). You’ll get another ‘Digidesign’ window with all the EQ controls. Start playing with the controls (or read the manual for an explanation of the controls 😉 ). If you hit preview, you’ll hear real time changes. When you are done, hit the render button, then OK. If you want to apply other FX, you’ll have to do a mixdown (although I’ve heard you can ‘alt’ or ‘option’ drag FX, but I don’t know that to be the case) and apply another one.
Another option is Sony’s Sound Forge with the optional Noise reduction plugin. Very powerful stuff for around $1000.00.
