  • I need help increasing sound…

Posted by Michael Jaffe on September 9, 2006 at 3:15 pm

I have a project that I’m editing. Unfortunately the sound volume of some of the dialogue in important scenes is very low. (there were only two of us on the project, so the video guy had to hold both the boom and camera as I was in every scene) I have increased the volume maually in final cut pro to 12 dbs, however, it is not enough. Is there anyway, either in fcp or with sountrack pro, to increase the sound of my dialogue beyond this level??

Thanks so much for any help / advice.

You can do this in Soundtrack Pro. Note that if you boost the sound level, you will increase the noise too..Soundtrack has a good noise reduction filter too, but its never going to be perfect. You will have to actually read the Soundtrack manual for the procedure, but what you want to do is pretty simple.

A quick and dirty solution in FCP is to double or even triple the sound clips…edit the same sound clip on multiple tracks…you can even nest them together to make it easier to work with.

No need to stack multiple copies of the same track to increase the level.

Add the Audio Filters > Apple > AUPeakLimiter and adjust the “Pre-gain” to any level you want.

Cool idea. Never thought of using that. I think Soundtrack Pro is his best option, because of the noise reduction capabilities.

“AUPeakLimiter and adjust the “Pre-gain” to any level you want.”
That tip has changed my life. I have it as part of my favorite effects, even have a short key for it.

Another trick is to select certain tracks, for instance, all the effect tracks and hit option C. This will nest those selected audio tracks. You can then boost the levels of just those tracks by raising the level of the nested audio sequence.

Another is AUDynamicsProcessor. Adjust Master Gain.
