I m a complete total Vegas beginner : Why did Vegas make my .MOV files unreadable?

Your workflow confuses me. What version of Vegas and where is “none”?

Did you try opening Vegas then dragging the MOV file to the timeline?

Also, to edit MOV files you need to have Quicktime installed.

1) are you sure that your MOV file was working before using Vegas?
2) what did you use to view your MOV file, apart from Vegas?

Hi, thanks for you answers.
I was able to read my .MOV files perfectly with Quicktime or even WMP before trying to drag then to Vegas. And yes I was able to move them to the timeline before it happened…
By the way I kept on working a little and I don t have the same problem with .AVI files, something really bugs me about that .MOV files thing, I tried with a meaningless .MOV file again to see if the same thing was going to happen and it did : moving it to the main window, not the preview one, something they call trimmer window or sth like that, and then selecting “None” instead of the file path above that window instantly creates a .SFK and a .SFL file wearing the .MOV file name, plus a .JPG file, and the .MOV still exists and becomes unreadable.
I’m using Vegas pro 10.0 by the way …

Don’t worry about the sfk and sfl files. Vegas uses these for waveform and other information.

I am really puzzled about the jpg file, though. You have to intentionally make a screen grab to get the jpg file.

MOV files, are by the way, notoriously difficult to edit. Many people find it better to transcode the MOV file into something easier to edit.

But I still don’t follow what you are doing. Open Vegas then drag the mov file to the timeline. What happens?

I still don’t follow what’s going on. What do you mean that you can’t drag the mov file? You mean that the icon is locked and won’t move?

Did you ever do a “render as” or “save as” using the same mov filename?

There’s something missing in your description of the problem because Vegas won’t do anything to your original media.

Well it s weird because it definitely did.
I can drag it but it now says that Vegas can’t read the file. It could before damaging it tho.

I agree with Steve.
I’ve been using Vegas since it was version 1.0 and have NEVER had it damage a file.
p.s. it’s not a good idea to post this question in two different Vegas forums on here as a lot of folks read one but not the other.

The only way this could happen is if you did a “save as” to the same filename, and I don’t think that Vegas would even allow that.
