i just need white!!!!!!
why doesn’t this work?
i filmed someone in a white room and want to key out the walls and ceiling but due to some tiny colour differences in the whites, my keying looks absolutely awful and bitty. and, should i use chroma, color or what key????

Key out White is not the best choice.
Did you light evenly with keying in mind?You can apply multiple keys.

Try a luminance (luma) key. Might want to color-correct the footage first. Then don’t try to do this in dv codec, use prores.
Also, try playing with your blending modes.

If the Luma Key doesn’t work I would try the Color Key.

Send to Color.
or in FCP do a secondary color correction on the whites.
When you have the whites white and blown out then try to do the key again.

When all else fails, you can roto this using photoshop’s fast masking tool.

Keying white…good luck. Even professionally shot, this is a nightmare. A commercial editor I know had to try to deal with this…for some reason the DP and director thought they could just use WHITE instead of Blue or Green to key…because they wanted both of those colors on the actors. After spending 3 days trying, he gave up. And they reshot the commercial.
You will not get a clean key from white.

Sure can be done and get a good results when done properly, but makes no much sense when colored backgrounds gives more options for pulling keys: Why to use just the Y channel when you have also Cb, Cr, R, G and B?White backgrounds are OK as they are: somebody with a white behind.
I would start, as David suggests, going to Color, to try to fix the background.
Try to pull a clean key and fix the subject on a second step if needed.

It CAN be done. Given time and money, most anything can be done. But when faced with the “low low budget” projects of today, the amount of time and effort put into this to make it look right means that when you are all done, you would have made $.14/hour…

It is for sure a multiple pas job, but I have had to create a seamless white background and that can be done. Once that is done, then you can try to pull a key from that but it is not a very effective way to try to pull a clean key.
As shane said, it will take a fair bit of time and effort just to get the whites, then keying that is another story.
DV Matte Pro might be a place to start for the keying partion as it is geared toward attempting to pull keys in the 4:1:1 color space which makes for very dirty mattes.
But hey, I can get a pretty good key off a white wall in my ichat chats these days.
