  • I just lost all my generated text media files: workarounds?

Wow: I just lost all of my Generated Text Media in Vegas Pro 9.0a. All of my past Generated Text Media events are now blank. I am doing teaching video, and I was counting on the Text Generators for putting quotations and such up on the screen. I do not see how I can move forward without text.

I have both Photoshop CS2, and Boris RED. I seem to remember Mike Kujbida mentioning some kind of a workaround with Photoshop?

Can I cut-and-paste from my teleprompter script (Word 2007), and bring it into either RED or Photoshop CS2, and then generate a file I can bring inside Vegas? Step-by-step instructions would be very much appreciated! Both of my projects are due Friday afternoon. Thanks!

Norman, my suggestions were in the Text Media thread.
I hope this helps until Sony can get this very serious bug fixed.

    OK, I re-read the thread.

Are there simple, step-by-step instructions for how to cut-and-paste from Word 2007 into Photoshop CS2, and then output a .psd file? I have the four VASST Photoshop DVD’s, but have not had time to go through them yet (as I was hoping to get my feet on the ground in Vegas first).

Or is it not really very simple?

Sorry Norman but I got sidetracked and forgot about this thread.
Yes, it’s very simple as I do it all the time.
I’ve got a default template (with transparent background) that I open up in Photoshop (still using PS 7 here).
I type my own words in or do a copy/paste from MS Word or any other text file.
Choose the appropriate font, colour, outline, drop shadow, etc. and save it out in PNG format.
If I need multiple screens that all have the same text properties, I’ll duplicate the layer, make the text changes, duplicate again, make changes, etc. until I’m done.
I’ll save this out as a master PSD but still save individaul layers in PNG format.
Bring into Vegas and drop on the timeline over top of anything you want.

Mike, this sounds like the solution.

I’ve got to finish two things, and then I want to do try this. I am reading up on Track Motion in Sony’s latest email right now, and think I can make three simple tracks to position the text I need.

In the Media Generators, I had found it very helpful to create a dark charcoal outline of the text, to make it stand out from the background.

In Photoshop, can I make the letters white (or yellow, as needed), but then give the letters a dark charcoal background; and then make the rest of the files clear (ie., alpha channel set at zero), in order to emulate a Media Generator file?

Mike, I opened up Adobe Photoshop, but I don’t know where to start. I got a 640 x 480 pixel canvas set up, but then when I cut and pasted the first sentence from Word, it sprawled across the canvas, and I could not figure out how to get it to wrap.

It does not behave or like any other program I have ever used. Is there some resource I can contact, where I can pay for a solution, or get an hour’s worth of tutoring? I have to get this figured out either tonight, or tomorrow morning early.

I will pay you, if you care to make a long distance phone call.

    Thank you,

    Norman

Norman, I get the feeling that you haven’t used Photoshop very much and I hope this isn’t too much for you.

When I’m in Photoshop 7 and go File-New, it beings up a box asking me what size document I want, what mode (RGB, etc.) and the Contents (White, Background Color, Transparent).
Choose Transparent and you won’t have to worry about creating an alpha channel as it’s already done for you.

Once this is done, you’re ready to begin.
You can make the letters any colour you want.
You get outlines and shadows by right-clicking the text layer in the Layers window and selecting Blending Options.
Outer Glow and Drop Shadow would be the two options (and there’s a lot of things to adjust in each one of these) I’d use for outlines and shadows.

No, I have never used it before. I have a lot of software I am just now learning to use, because the video editing (and the website development) got dumped in my lap (long story).

I found someone locally who teaches Photoshop, and I am supposed to call her in an hour. She said she will talk me through it.

Norman, once you get through all this and have some time to sit down and learn Photoshop, Creative Cow has an excellent (and free!!) podcast series on iTunes called Creative Cow Photoshop for Video (HD) with Photoshop guru Richard Harrington.
I watched several of them and highly recommend this series.

She did great! After about an hour and a half’s worth of tutoring, I feel like I can at least get started with the tool now.

You are right, it is more work than media generators, but it looks like it has a lot more possibilities and options.

Now I finally understand why people like CS4.
