When I open up AE, the start up window says “2% used of 3GB.” I am assuming this is referring to my memory, but I have 4GB of RAM installed. System Profiler would also confirm this. Does this mean AE is only using 3 out of 4GB of my memory?

if you are using a 64-bit windows and you have multiple processors (or cores) you can utilize all 4gb for rendering and previews if you enable multiprocessing in after effects (preferences>multiprocessing). this will launch multiple render engines (one for each processor) and allow each to utilize about 2gb of ram.

if you are running 32-bit windows then the most your system can address is 4gb (1gb for system and 3gb for other applications).

    yep, that makes it easy…

osx is 64-bit, so your system can address all the ram you can throw at it. ae (being 32-bit) is still limited to 3gb, but with multiprocessing the render engine can utilize around 2gb per core… so, if you have a 4-core mac, it could use around 8gb of ram for rendering with multiprocessing enabled.
