I just love Sony Vegas, by far it’s the easiest program of it’s type to use. It’s user friendly and it’s easy on my computer. Plus with all the special efx plugins available, I feel I have no need to use anything else for my video projects.

But…(you knew there was a but coming)…I’ve recently purchased some plugins that are for After Effects only (Some Red Giant plugins) and after using Vegas for so long, I find it SO difficult and am so impatient with trying to use After Effects.

Now, I’ll admit up front, I don’t use AE very often and am not anywhere near as familiar with the software as I am with Vegas.
It all seems so complicated (there’s definitely a steeper learning curve). But the thing that bugs me is the slowness of the preview rendering. In Vegas you can hit play or move the scrubber and get near real time action. As opposed to AE or FXhome VisionLab (which I own too) where each frame seems to take forever to render in preview.

Oh, btw, I’m running Windows 7 on an AMD Athlon 64-bit Dual Proc. with 8 GB of ram.

I also realize that Vegas is primarily meant for editing, while AE and VisionLab are made for special effects (VisionLab seems to attract the Light Saber crowd), but gosh darn it, why can’t these other programs run as easily and be as user friendly as my beautiful Vegas does?!?!

Alright, rant over. Sorry, too much coffee today and I was getting frustrated with AE and needed to take a break and blow off some steam. Thanks for letting me vent. And I’d appreciate some comment, tips or feedback. Thanks!

Because Vegas is an editing tool with some compositing features, and AE is a compositing tool with very few editing features…hard to compare them; they’re apples n’ oranges. Both fruits, but not at all the same.

AE doesn’t buffer up content the way Vegas does, but it does have some hardware access that Vegas doesn’t have.

One thing I’ll say…after having seen a demo of Mercury with AE…Mercury is really da’ bomb! Check it out. I wish Vegas had something like this.

Please forgive my ignorance, but I would like to hear more about the difference btwn compositing vs. editing.

Editing is cutting up bits and pieces of video so that the combination tells a story or shares a message (generally speaking).

Compositing is composing a frame or series of frames to create an image that doesn’t already exist. For example, chromakeying is compositing. Making a title is compositing. Picture in picture is compositing.
Then again, so is layering dozens of still images, animating them, and combining them to generate an image that isn’t “real.”
