I can’t launch FCP; I have tried many times.I get an error message giving me the option to close, reopen or see a log detailing the attempt to open, which can be emailed to Apple. I closed all the open programs, I restarted the computer, I turned the computer off and on again; nothing seems to work.

I am working with FCP HD 4.5 on the first generation G5. I haven’t opened FCP in a couple of months. I the meantime I updated my version of After Effects to CS3 and have been working in that. I don’t see why that would be relevant but am mentioning it in case it may create some sort of conflict.

    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

If you own Disk Warrior I would certainly try it ASAP. Also, try trashing your prefs and fixing pemissions using the Disk Utility. One of those just might do the trick for you. Let me know how you do…

I don’t own Disc Warrior. I trashed my FC preferences. Re the disc utility: FC is of course in my applications folder on my main hard drive; should I select the hard drive and click on “Repair Disk Permissions”? (Is the main hard drive the “startup disk?” If so, the Disc Utility says to start up from my OS X install disc, then run Disc Utilities. Do I need to do this?)
    Thanks.

    Hi Victoria,

I’m surprised it’s giving you that message. Are you running Tiger? It might be doing that because something is awry. Probably can’t hurt, but be cautious. Copy your FCP projects to another drive or to a DVD or CD before proceeding.

    Yes.

    Hi David.

I’m running OS X 4.11. I forget which jungle animal gave rise to that upgrade. Upon closer reading of the Disc Utility instruction, it says that if I want to repair my startup disk I have to start up from the Install disc. But that’s not what I am doing, I am simply repairing disc permissions, right? As soon as you confirm I will go ahead and do that.

Bingo!!! That sound more like it. Yes, go ahead and repair the permissions. I have my fingers crossed that it works…

And, if you plan to keep doing this video stuff, I really would advise that you get Disk Warrior. Its invaluable…

    Good luck,

    David,

I just ran it, opened FC and my project. You are the Man! Thank you so much. I will look into getting Disc Warrior.

Terrific!!! I’m pleased to hear that was it. Now you get on with the creative stuff, with is tough enough without those darned permissions getting in the way.

What I want to know is why does a person my age still have to get permission?
    Thanks again, David.

Hear that, David? Now, no more whining about being dropped like yesterday’s news *grin*

    I’m the man… I’m not the man… I’m the man again…

Gosh, that must be what a person feels who’s confused about their sexual identity. Thankfully I came right out of the box with my orientation squarely dialed-in hetero.

*** BTW, there’s no put-down intended to those of any other persuasion or orientation… It’s just that confusion on that topic must simply be pretty darned confusing.
