  • I can’t import a premiere pro project – any tips?

Posted by Jeff Baker on April 22, 2006 at 12:54 am

I have the Adobe premiere 1.5 project that is a little over an hour long that I would like to import to After Effects for finishing.

But it will not import. I have tried to import it into both AE 6.5 and 7.0 (both pro versions) without any sucess. In both cases I used the FILE/IMPORT/FILE menu option and AE asks me which sequence I want to export and then just stops responding.

I do not get any import option for premiere project files… Is there one?

Thinking it might be a large project and AE just needed time I gave it an hour — but still NOT RESPONDING.

I tried activating the disk cache for kicks, but still no luck.

Are there any gottchas or tips for importing premiere project files into AE?

Try importing your premiere project into a blank premiere project, save that and then import that project into AE. Don’t specify a sequence just import all.

Try purging your prefs if that doesn’t work. hold ctrl, alt and shift durning ae startup.

Do some tests with premiere just make a new project import 1 piece of footage make a couple of edits and then try importing that in AE. Maybe your premiere project is just too big.

    Let us know what happens.

Thanks for the post. I did try creating a new sequence in Premiere Pro and then cut and pasted it into a new Premiere project (So just one sequence in the timeline) and then tried to import that file into AE 7 (have not tired 6.5 yet). I got an error message indicating an unknown error occured with the premeire import (I’ll write it down next time) and then it opened various clips with the error:

    cannot find vids:cdvc decompressor

I assume this has something to do with Canopus but I’m not sure. Most of the project clips were captured as with the canopus DV codec and anything else is uncompressed. Now AE 6.5 worked just fine with the canopus codec but I will have to see if I get a similar error with that version.

Bottom line is that the import was partially sucessful but many video files ended up being blank so I could not work with them.

I am currently trying to export to intermediate codec (Microcosm), but with the old premiere project I would run into the dreaded “Error Compiling Movie” messages in Premiere. If that happens again, the only way I may be able to get my project exported out of Premiere is by Frameserving it (DebugMode’s plugin) or going to tape and back into AE…
