I cannot save in FCP – get File Error: Unknown File… help!
Posted by Bill Russell on April 13, 2007 at 4:25 amThis happens every day at some point, and each time I lose work! I suddenly cannot save whatever project(s) I have open. I get “File Error: Unknown File”. All I can do is quit Final Cut without saving. Re-opening, the file error goes away….for a while. I’ve Diskwarrior’d, Applejacked, repaired permissions, replaced preferences…. What is this? It’s killing me… help!
I’m working on a duel intel mac with lots of Apple certified ram, with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4

April 13, 2007 at 5:27 amTry doing a “Save As” on your project and work with the new one for a while to see if the same problem crops up. I’m thinking that it might be a corrupt project file.
If that doesn’t work then export an XML file and open it up in a new project. Maybe that will solve it.
It may also be a piece of corrupt media. To check that you need to make your media offline and then connect one at a time, do some work and then save, connect another piece, etc. Slow, but……. Sometimes one of the worst offenders of corrupt media turn out to be pictures or graphics.
Hope this helps.

April 13, 2007 at 5:33 amWhen I’ve got a corrupt project, I open a new project and I drag and drop everything from the old one to the new and save it. This work in the most part of the cases. What Don suggest is more or less the same solution. However I think this can work when a project is corrupt.
If you got problems with all the projects, I think can be other issue.

April 13, 2007 at 6:59 ami’ve got the same problem. it occurs when your project file is located on a external device (in my case its our server). i put the file locally on my desktop an when i’m finished i copy it to the right destination. when it pops up during work and you havn’t done this before, i could always “save as” on my desktop.
i don’t know if this is a bug or a feature for it exists for several versions… if someone tells me, i will tell, how to produce bruce the wonderyak! … or do you already know?joachim freitag

It’s extremely bad luck for anyone to post any information concerning Bruce. Consider yourself duly informed and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself if you do post something about Bruce and your computer goes up in flames immediately afterwards 🙂

April 13, 2007 at 10:56 amI.m reasing in this forum more problems with project corruptions since the arrival of the 5.1.x.
BTW, what is “Bruce the wonderyak”? I’ve had a look in Google amd only mention something about a hidden feature of FC.

Ah, thank you, yes, that seems to be it. It’s between FCP and the external drive. Any project file can do this, so it has nothing to do with a corrupt project. Yup, suddenly FCP can no longer write project-type files to the device, including AutoSave files. But if Autosave is directed to another device, or I save a copy of the project to another device, then it works. This is a PAIN, but it is a workaround, so thank you!!
FCP 5.x feels like it has a lot kludgey type fixes in it, from media management fix attempts to this file error thing. Hmm….
