I have a Lacie external Drive. Is there anything i need to do to it to make it work the best. I hear people mention RAID but not sure how to configure it all and if it’s necessary for everyone…any pros and cons involved…etc.

you need more than one drive to make a RAID
Look it up on wikipedia, some good info on RAIDS there.

As far as getting your drive good to go. Open up disk utility, and erase it/reformat it to OSX extended ***NOT JOURNALED*** and you’re good to go.

Erase it using Disc Utility as Mac OS Extended.

If it supports any sort of RAID beyond RAID 0, like 3 or 5, you can use that. Or just leave it in RAID 0.

LaCie makes about 25 or so different external drives so without knowing which unit you actually have it’s kind of hard to give any further advice.
