I am confused by all of the different Sony video editing programs.

I was told Sony Vegas is good if your budget is $100 to $200 but I am not seeing that at this link.

I am only seeing the big money versions?

What is the difference between the other Sony programs and Sony Moviemaker?

How is anyone to make sense of any of this?

The Vegas family comparison tables are on that same site.

Many people confuse Movie Studio with Sony Vegas Pro, and call it Sony Vegas Movie Studio etc.
    They are not the same.

[Jeff David] “I was told Sony Vegas is good if your budget is $100 to $200 but I am not seeing that at this link.”

As Aleksey pointed out. Many people still refer to Movie Studio as Vegas even though the word “Vegas” has been removed from the name. They probably meant Sony Movie Studio.

[Jeff David] “What is the difference between the other Sony programs and Sony Moviemaker?”

I assume you mean Sony Movie Studio (MovieMaker is the free video editor that ships with Windows). Movie Studio is what you want if you’re on a budget. It’s a scaled down version of Vegas Pro. It’s a quite capable NLE in it’s own right. Unfortunately, it is now designed to be used on a touch screen with big buttons that some people don’t like.

I recommend that you download the free trials and try both programs out for yourself. That’s the only way to really tell what you like. Of course, if Vegas Pro is out of your budget then just try Movie Studio.

    OK thanks that helps.

I did download the trial but haven’t tried it yet.

However, this touch screen thing bothers me. Is it able to be used without the touchscreen? It’s not viable for me if it is mandatory touch screen.

Looks like it’s about $150 and then if you want support – which I will most likely need it’s another $150.

Yes you can use it without a touch screen. It just looks silly with these big oversized buttons. It’s purely cosmetic but it bothers some people.

You don’t have to buy the Suite unless you think you’re going to use all the additional software. There is no difference between the $80 Movie Studio Platinum and the $150 Suite version. It’s the exact same Movie Studio. The extra $70 is to pay for the additional software. So unless you need the additional software, you don’t need to spend the extra money.

Touch-enabled for touch PCs as SCS puts it just means that the buttons are “touch-friendly”, i.e. as JR said “big buttons that some people don’t like” in the new v 13 interface.
You can still use it with your mouse and keyboard, as I think most of us still do.
There’s an honest independent write-up and tutorials on Sony Movie Studio 13 Platinum here.
Remember that Movie Studio 13 Suite is the same as Platinum with several add-ons.

Seems you’ll probably find MS 13 Suite at about $100 at the moment, if you shop around. Free “peer support” from other users can be found on some of the Vegas forums such as Cow and the SCS Vegas MS forum. These sites have a lot of free tutorials as well.

    edit: seems I was s-l-o-w =)

    OK thanks – that helps.

by the way, I have serif MOVIEPLUS now. Worked on a project for 3 years – although just part time – only to find out MOVIEPLUS CAN’T EXPORT!!!!

I am not making that up. Avoid it like the plague. I mean serioiusly, 3 years of work only to find out it does not export.

I never tried to export in the 3 years as my project was not finished so there would be no need to export it.

They are the worst JUST SAY NO TO SERIF MOVIEPLUS!!!

It claims to be able to export to: AVCHD, MP4, AVI, WMV, MPG and QuickTime MOV so I’m not sure if you just had a problem with the software but it definitely exports as a feature.

It depends on luck of the draw. The Serif Movieplus technicians are admitting that lots of people can’t export the HD.

Yesterday the tech admitted this freely.

So I said well what do other people do when they can’t export?

He literally said, “buy a 64 bit software.”

There are also many people making this complaint in the company forums.

As you prob know HD is heavy on resources but the MOVIEPLUS is only 32 bit software so even if someone has a 64 bit computer (I have a i7 quadcore 64 bit) it is limited to only 2.5 gb when exporting and therein lies the problem.

Now I am a novice but the advertising and company (Serif) are emphatic that is is good for use w HDef. so I had no way of knowing this starting out as Serif only tells you this when your export fails.

So I said to the tech well how come some people can export and others can’t and he was talking about how the files are stored if they are contiguous and if not that the program can’t grab enough data as it’s only 32 bit something about 1 gb but basically he said it just depends on how your files are stacked up on your computer.

He said THEY DON’T HELP WITH THAT but suggested I try it.

I will work with a microsoft level 3 tech later today to see if we can re-arrange the files.

So end result, is they defraud half of the people as only some are able to export and they are only able to export small files of not long duration and preferably not HD.

I am actually going to contact the President of the company about what I feel is fraudulent and post on the internet so others are aware.

Ahh.. OK so your saying that the software doesn’t work as advertised not that there is no export option. I understand why you’re upset. If it allows you to export a smaller segment of the timeline, perhaps you can export several smaller videos and then put them back together in Movie Studio?
