I am completely in the dark on this one.
I am hoping someone can help me with this major problem. I am not a full time editor so any help would be appreciated.
I have video shot on the canon t2i camera system. it was shot in 1920x1080p, 24p. I used mpeg streamclip to convert the files from canon file system to apple pro-res LT 422. I’ve done this before and never had a problem.
I load the clips in and do my edit. I render and now my sequence is in 1440×1080 square. I went in and changed the settings back so the sequence is in 1920×1080, 24p. However, I now have black bars on the side of the clip. I tried changing the settings to square and other settings but I am getting the same stupid bars. My pixel apsect is still 1440×1080 and when I switch it to square, it makes the video square but still with the black bars on each side.
Please, someone help me out!!!

Once you’ve begun a project with sequence settings that are improper, the video clips on the timeline are all conformed improperly. So, once you set the seq. settings back to the proper settings you have to select all clips and use remove attributes to remove Basic Motion and Distort attributes, thus resetting the clip to their defaults.
In the future, you always need to make absolutely certain that your sequence settings match your video after editing the very first clip. That’s how it’s done properly, and it’s a great way to avoid a myriad of issue that might otherwise haunt you later.

Thank you so much. I’m lucky that it’s only a 2 minute clip I am making. What settings would you suggest I have for importing video. I shoot on the 7d and the t2i almost 90%of the time.

Drop a clip on the “create new sequence” icon @ the bottom of the browser. Let FCP match it up for you.

Do as Chris said, or choose the proper Easy Setup that precisely matches your video before editing a thing. Then, delete sequence 1, as that will be set to the factory default (DV). Open a new sequence, which will now match your Easy Setup, and edit away.
