    Arniepix,

Thanks for the response, I was busy typing a reply to a few others when you weighed in. I think I was able to answer most of the questions you have in a few previous responses. I sincerely hope when you move to FCP5 you have better luck than me. And since your computer only crashes 12 times a year, you are odds are definitely better than mine.

You’ve definitely got something set wrong. There’s a noticeable gamma shift between the 2 pics, & there shouldn’t be any. you said above that your timeline was “based” on the DV easy setup. Can you elaborate? Also, when I de-interlaced your timeline export in PhotoShop, there were still some jaggies, which suggests that the quality settings may not be at full.

    202-

OUr FCP systems are very solid. The one time I had problems on a laptop system is when the Ram was bad…not in matched pairs, etc., Are all the other programs running on the G5 doing well?

[the202] “And since your computer only crashes 12 times a year, you are odds are definitely better than mine.”

FCP crashes less than 12 times a year. The computer itself crashes maybe 1 or 2 times a year. And I have to really work at it to make that happen!

BTW, about 2 weeks ago I decided to try doing a photomontage in Motion, just as a sort of learning exercise. I doubt that I’ll ever do one in FCP again if I have Motion available. The workflow is just faster. Give me some time to adjust the workflow & I expect that I can cut my work time in half or less for these things.

OK I can now replicate the “The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly” scenario. In the midst of a project If I click System Settings>Effect Handling and select NONE for DV/DVCPRO-NTSC and return to my project, render the timeline and then return to System Settings for any other reason even to make no change or simply click Cancel, FCP5 quits…immediately.

I hate to say it guys, but I am seeing some wierdness in FCP 5 that I never saw in previous versions. I have been editing for over 20 years and with FCP for 5 years so I know what I’m looking at.

I’m still evaluating what’s going on but I have seen some funky graphics in “normal” motion filter mode (and in best) and had to drop the project back to ‘fastest’ mode.

I also tried an experiment where I took a photoshop graphic with an alpha channel and slowly rotated it over over color bars. In any mode but ‘fastest’ I see little jumps in the graphic layer. When I use ‘fastest’ mode the jumps go away.

Of course this is on a system where everything is new: G5 Dual 2.7 with Tiger 10.4.1, FCP 5 using an AJA IO with the new beta drivers. Everything is done in DV and I’ve been working with DV in 4 and 4.5 and I know what to expect. What I’m seeing now is different.

We’ll see where it goes from here. With so many new pieces to the puzzle it’s hard to point in any one direction, but my feeling is that FCP 5 image handling is a little weird. Or is it QT7? Who knows!!!

    Scott,

Yes, everything else is seems to be working great. I found a copy of FCXpress, 2.0 and just installed it. Near as I can tell my problem is now GONE. I haven’t adjusted any setting, it is in a default DV configuration and working fine with static images. I havn’t tried any motion tabs just yet but I’ll let you know.

We also had to switch to to Faster in the render settings to get an images not to jitter.
202 did you do a clean install or upgrade on top of Panther.
We did a clean install and have not had any crashes yet.
Have you tried trashing the prefs?

    the202,
    What were your settings exactly.
Also did you have motion blur on?
I noticed the one you renderd out was a .png, also there does seem to be a gama shift as someone else pointed out.
You said you have Motion if so I would just work in that if you are still having problems.
    best of luck

    Dave,

No I haven’t tried the trashing prefs yet although I just read a little about that over at Apples Discussion thread. When I set this computer up two weeks back, it came with 10.3x preloaded and a new Tiger disk. I installed Tiger first thing, then my CS suite, Peak and few others…it was a clean install. FCP5 is the first version of Final Cut I have used, it arrived last Thursday with FC Studio. I captured and cut some DV with it but did not utilize any graphics until now. I have since found and loaded a FC Xpress disk, and all the problems I was experiencing are GONE.
