So, we just got approval to purchase two HVXs and we are super excited to finally replace our Beta SPs. Can anyone suggest essential (or non-essential but handy) accessories to make shooting easier/better/etc. I was thinking of outfitting one or both with one of those firewire hard drives, extra batteries of course, shoulder brace, etc. Figuring out how to archive all the different formats is going to be a logistical nightmare. We have a DVCpro 50 deck and a DVD burner. That’s it. any tips?

Extra batteries, a P2 Store, a Powerbook, good HD LCD monitor and many P2 cards would be the essentials. Then a good matte box, tripods, HD editing card for your NLE software(which hopefully is FCP) and a lot of hard drives.

You know, I went from my DVCAM to the HVX200. The HVX200 is much more heavy and I need a new tripod since the camera shakes alot more. Make sure you have a good tripod.

I bought a Chroziel mattbox w/ rods for the HVX and like the little extra weight for smoothing handheld shots . . . the top french flag certainly comes in handy . . . also, I read that Rodney Charters, the DP for the TV show “24” tried shooting w/ the HVX (and other 1/3″chip cameras) on their set . . . and the response from Keifer Sutherland, was that it was difficult to “act” in front of such a small camera . . .so Rodney suggests to get a large mattebox to have “something” for the actors to look into . . . interesting . . .

Thanks for all your comments. Now I have to fit them in the budget.

P2 Genie is an absolute must – it’ll automate the process of offloading media from the P2 cards onto the laptop hard drives. It’s cheap, too, something like $30.

I use a cheap PC laptop for this and it works like a charm – you don’t need a Mac laptop. I think that’s essential if you don’t have a P2 store or an FS100.

Note that any day Serious Magic is due to release DVRackHD that will support the HVX and DVCPro50 and DVCProHD.

Off-brand batteries work fine as well. I use Lenmar 5.4 mAh. $60 each.

    A good case.
